Why You Should Use Interactive Notebooks in World Language

“OK, what’s the big deal with interactive notebooks, and why is everyone using them?” I was thinking.  Maybe in Science Class, but in World Language?  I thought they were just a fad that would go away.

Until I used them.

Now I have to tell you about them and why you might want to use them too.

Interactive Notebook Activities for Spanish One, Two, and Three

First, and foremost, they actively involve the students in their own learning.  Secondly, they ENGAGE the student. Thirdly, they organize the material in different ways, using more of the senses, so that students remember.  Lastly, they keep students organized.

I couldn’t believe how the students kept going back to their own notes they had written when trying to decide whether to use the imperfect or preterite.  Also, they were not just sitting there while I was presenting the PowerPoint, or writing their own half-hazard notes.  The organization was already done for them; they just had to write the sentences in the correct places.

It was great to see that the students were not bored because they were INTERACTING with the concept I was teaching them.  White boards also engage students but I use those mostly for checking for understanding AFTER students have interacted with the material.

Because I rarely use the book students struggle to keep all the information and notes organized. Therefore, I require my level two students to put all their grammar and vocabulary handouts (essentially the book) in their NUMBERED interactive notebooks so I can say, “Now, class, turn to page….” and I do not lose instructional time while they line up in front of the handout file searching for an extra.

Lastly, I think they really got it!  I still used my TPR Story-telling strategies to cement the imperfect and preterite but they had a solid grasp of when to use those tenses because of the Interactive Notebook Activity.
